Fluorescein sodium is widely known as a fluorescent dye. In its form as a water-soluble sodium salt, it is called uranine. When exposed to daylight or UV light, a uranine solution emits a pronounced green fluorescence. The red/yellowish uranine powder has a very high coloring capacity even in low concentrations. It is therefore used, for example, by shipwrecked people to attract the attention of search parties. Uranine is also widely used as a biologically harmless substance in leak detection.
The leak test of flat roofs and the creation of impressive color effects in discotheques or nightclubs are further common areas of application for uranine.
