Lithium-ion batteries & lithium-polymer batteries (Lipos) as a source of danger during charging, storage and use

The risk of ignition of a lithium-ion battery or LiPo battery is low if handled correctly, but it does exist. Examples of burning batteries or cell phones and smartphones exploding during charging are well known. The higher the battery capacity, the greater the risk. If short circuits occur in the lipo cells due to external or internal damage and the cells discharge suddenly as a result, a fire can occur. This spreads rapidly due to the extreme temperatures that develop.

Batteries can also self-ignite during charging or discharging without any external influence. There is also a certain danger in carelessly storing lipos, lithium batteries, smartphones, cell phone batteries or even e-bike batteries in the home. As a rule, however, these are defective LiPo batteries that ignite during charging on the charger. Charging batteries can cause a fire if the charger adds more energy than can be stored (overcharging). Burning lithium batteries fall under fire protection class D as metal fires that are difficult to control. The fire can only be controlled with a suitable extinguishing agent.
